Digital Gauss Meter: Quantifying Magnetic Field Strength in NDT

 

A Digital Gauss Meter (or Tesla Meter) is a precision electronic instrument used to quantitatively measure the strength (flux density) of a magnetic field.1 It is an essential tool in Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) and demagnetization processes.

Function and Design

 
  1. Measurement Principle: The meter utilizes a Hall Effect probe as its sensor.3 The Hall Effect principle states that when a current-carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field, a voltage (the Hall voltage) is generated perpendicular to both the current and the magnetic field.4 This voltage is directly proportional to the magnetic field strength.

  2. Units: The meter displays the magnetic flux density in precise units:

    • Gauss (G): The CGS unit for magnetic flux density.

    • Tesla (T): The SI unit for magnetic flux density ($1\ \text{Tesla} = 10,000\ \text{Gauss}$).

  3. Accuracy: Unlike qualitative field indicators (like a simple pocket field indicator), the digital Gauss meter provides high-accuracy, traceable numerical readings.

  4. Probe Types: Probes come in two main configurations:

    • Axial Probe: Measures the magnetic field component parallel to the probe body.

    • Transverse Probe: Measures the magnetic field component perpendicular to the probe body.

Applications in MPI

The Digital Gauss Meter is mandatory for critical magnetic measurements in NDT:

  • Magnetization Check: It can be used to measure the field strength generated by MPI yokes or coils to ensure they meet minimum standards required to magnetize the part effectively (though this is often challenged by material permeability).

  • Demagnetization Verification: Its most critical use is measuring the residual magnetism (the field left after the magnetizing current is removed) in a component. This measurement ensures that the part has been successfully demagnetized below acceptance limits (typically less than 3 Gauss for sensitive applications) to prevent interference with subsequent manufacturing or service.

  • Field Plotting: It can be used to map out the magnetic field profile across complex component geometries.
