Centrifuge Tube:

The Centrifuge Tube is a specialized, graduated laboratory accessory essential for maintaining the consistency and reliability of the wet magnetic particle inspection (MPI) process. Its sole purpose is to accurately measure the concentration of magnetic particles suspended in the carrier fluid (typically water or oil) within the wet bench system.

 Design and Usage

The Centrifuge Tube is a small, conical glass or plastic tube designed to facilitate a specific gravity test for the magnetic particle suspension:

  1. Graduated Volume: The tube typically has a capacity of $100\ \text{ml}$ and features fine graduations (often $0.1\ \text{ml}$ divisions) in the narrow, tapered bottom section. This tapered bottom is where the settled particles are measured.

  2. Sampling: A specific volume of the well-mixed magnetic particle bath (usually $100\ \text{ml}$) is drawn from the MPI bench's hose or tank and poured into the centrifuge tube.

  3. Settling: The sample is allowed to stand undisturbed for a specified time:

    • Water Carrier: Usually 30 minutes.

    • Oil Carrier: Usually 60 minutes.

  4. Measurement: After the settling time, the magnetic particles drop to the bottom of the cone due to gravity. The inspector reads the volume of the settled particles directly from the graduations on the tapered section.

Importance of Particle Concentration

The concentration of magnetic particles is a critical variable in MPI sensitivity.

  • Too Low: If the particle concentration is too low, the defects may not attract enough particles to form a visible indication, leading to false negatives (missed defects).

  • Too High: If the concentration is too high, the background contrast is reduced, and excessive background fluorescence can mask fine indications, also leading to unreliable results.
