Outside Micrometers

Outside micrometers—also known as external micrometers—are the most commonly used type. They measure the external dimensions of an object, such as thickness, outer diameter, and width. These micrometers consist of a rigid C-frame, a spindle, an anvil, and a calibrated thimble. The object is placed between the spindle and anvil, and the spindle is adjusted until it gently contacts the surface. Their accuracy makes them ideal for checking machined parts, verifying tolerances, and performing quality control checks.

Inside Micrometers

Inside micrometers are designed to measure internal dimensions such as hole diameters, groove widths, and slot sizes. Instead of a C-frame, they use a set of rods or extensions that expand outward between the internal surfaces. By rotating the thimble, the rods extend until they make contact with the inside walls of the component. Inside micrometers provide a reliable alternative to calipers when a higher degree of accuracy is required for internal measurements.

Depth Micrometers

Depth micrometers are used to measure the depth of holes, steps, slots, and recesses. They feature a flat reference base and a precision spindle that moves downward to reach the bottom of the feature being measured. Depth micrometers ensure repeatable, accurate readings in applications such as toolmaking, mold inspection, and machining operations where depth tolerance is critical.

Importance in Industrial Applications

Across all three types, micrometers offer superior accuracy compared to calipers and many other measuring tools. They are widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, fabrication, and NDT, where even slight measurement variations can impact performance, safety, or compliance.
